Being one of the five and only playhouses on Broadway, this most famous theater hails from 1924, when it had a different name. It was then known as B.S. Moss’s Colony and it was actually a premiere film house. In 1928, the most notable film at the time was played there, for the first time, and it was Walt Disney’s Steamboat Willie.
That was the first time that American audience had a privilege to see one of the most famous mice on film, Mickey Mouse. In 1934, the theater was renamed to the Broadway and it was completely dedicated to motion picture up until 1940. During that period, Disney had one more premiere, Fantasia.
Even though it went really well, in 1940, Broadway returns to legitimate stage production and it remained a live theater ever since. The Broadway had a brief stint in the 1950s when it was a Cinerama movie theater. Since it is a large size theater, it was ideal for musical comedies.
There is a really big stage there, previously and originally intended for accommodating the entire orchestra that was to accompany silent films, which is big enough to fit a whole aircraft. There is a total of 1765 seats in the theater. The interior was built in the Italian Renaissance style. In 1991, a skyscraper was built above the theater which saw the Broadway resurfaced in polished granite.
